You will require the beavertail to get your grip as high as possible and not get bit when you shoot.

How did people do it before beavertails? I have four 1911's two with and two without. Personally, I don't see that much of a difference but I'm also not an expert buy any means.

They didn't use high grips or thumbs forward grips

pig said it all. I have 1911's with GI style "mini-beavers". I have filed the edges so they do not cut the web of my hand. Eventually I will change them all out, the GI style is not good for high round count practice, nor would I want to get bit during a SD situation. It is the old style, just no longer practical.
