I don't know how old the McPherson knife is, but is sure is good looking. Your unknown knife maker might be one of the ones in this list.

Day 7 Don Cowles
http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/al...cowles_two.jpg
A pair of Don Cowles "Gentleman's Pocket Knives. I ordered these from Don for my wife and I - my wife's knife is the long slender knife is called a "Mistress" and mine, the other; called "The Hump." What's not to like? Damascus blades, Mokume bolsters, ivory scales. |
That Mokume-gane is some very interesting material, to say the least, and matches up very nicely with the Damascus !

Those are purdy.

Day 8 - Something Special
I'm not telling the following story not for any pats on the back; but to just share it with you all:
I bought these knives, known as "The Bears" from Fred Rowe sometime around 2007 or 2008. My ex-wife did the scrimshaw of the Grizzly Bears on the crown of the stag. Fred only sent the handles to be scrimshawed but it wasn't until a knife show that I saw them....I was able to buy them at a great price; and sent them to Sandy Morrissey in TN for sheaths. Invariably, when talking with Fred (he's also a close friend) the discussion would end up talking about the Bears. I sort of sensed Fred regretted selling them; once even stating that. He always spoke of them like they were a lover who got away. I wrestled with a thought for a few months; finally for Christmas 2017 I wrapped the knives up and sent them to Fred's wife - to be opened by Fred on Christmas Day. According to Fred's wife Fred's eyes leaked a little of salty water! One of the best friend moments ever! It was without doubt one of the best things I've ever done for a friend. To close the loop on this story - I spent 4 days in the ICU and another 3 days in the hospital last April with a Pulmonary Embolism. My wife brought a cardboard box to me one day from Fred. He sent me a batch of his Iced Ginger Cookies. The box seemed heavier then a box of cookies should weigh - Fred made me a knife and sent it to me! Without further discussion - here's "The Bears!!" http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/al.../the_bears.jpg And here's the knife Fred sent me while I was in the hospital: http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/al.../Feather_1.jpg Feather Damascus |
Day 9 Gene Baskett 1911 Knife
Gene is the President of the Knife Makers Guild; and makes great knives. Although not the first custom maker to make a knife using 1911 Pistol grips for a handle he is one of the pioneers of this genre. I have two of his 1911 Stock Knives; one with Pachmeyr Grips (marked #5) and this one, the best use of VZ Stocks in my Opinion. Gene attaches the scales with Torx screws; the screw heads where you'd normally attached them to the pistol are decorative only.

Wow, those Bear knives are badass! Good move on gifting them to your friend, well played.

Day 10 The Master of the Recurve
Mister Jim Siska!
I've admired Jim's work for a long time but had never met him until about 5 years ago at an Easton, PA Knife Show. The luck of the draw put are tables next to each others. By the end of Day 1 Jim was down to 2 or 3 knives; on day #2 Jim had one knife left so it became mine! It wasn't cheap but I suspect that Jim cut me some slack when I asked him how much! http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/al...siska_14_2.jpg |
Day 11 - Something Different
Rick Hinderer makes some pretty awesome folding knives; so it kind of surprised me when I found these two knives by Rick. The first is his take on a Chute Knife; the other - a damascus "letter opener". The letter opener is marked "RH" - several years ago at a knife show in Ohio Rick looked at it, said it was his work, and wrote the info on the back of one of my business cards.
