WW231 what charge are y'all using?

how many grains of WW231 are y'all using with a 230 grain Bullet?

my Dad had 5.7 grains of 231 under a 230 grain cast Bullet written down in his reloading manual so I loaded some up and shot them today. they were extremely accurate but they felt pretty stout.

I did some looking online and some people were saying 5.4 grains is Max while others said 6.2 grains was Max.

just wondering what y'all were shooting.

I have used 5.3 grains of HP-38, which is the same powder, just with a Hodgdon label instead of a Winchester label. Hodgdon shows that as a maximum charge at 834 fps, but I chronographed at only 700 fps which doesn't even make the power floor for IDPA. Maybe my powder is going bad or something???

Not sure what's up with the data. My Speer manual says 5.6 max, my Lee manual says 5.1.

Yep, must be going bad and should be disposed of properly. Fortunately I know how to do it, so get all that powder to me and I will use a controlled small detonation in a brass cylender with a lead plug to dispose of it.

😝

weird, my Lyman Manual (48th edition) shows 5.8 grains Max for a 225 grain cast for 902fps. and Hodgdon shows 5.3 grains Max.

the Data really seems to be all over the place.

my cases didn't show any high pressure signs so I imagine it's okay but it sure had a lot more kick compared to Winchester white box.

6.0 would be max, I have loaded it past 6 adn the chrony didn't do much over 900 but was terrible shooting. I use 5.6-5.8 and have good data on that. Can usually get 825-850ish fps in my STI. Pretty happy with that.

About the numbers all over you have to remember a laweyer helped them with that loading book and they aer scared to death of lawsuits.

FYI I have found the LEE manuals to be the weakest and most reserved. I use multiple books for referance but never one for a load.

I think this is why a chrony is a must for loading to find what works and what doesn't....but that is my opinon!

Another thoguth when they test the loads for manuals they use perfect conditions as well. Usually underground in a controlled enviroment and using longer barrels than we shoot out of. Trying to get good numbers. You all should se the Hornady range...super awesome!!!

You're supposed to put powder in the cases before the bullets??? Crap, now you tell me....:facepalm2:

I shoot 5.1 grains of 231 under a lrn. Anything less leaves a lot of unburned powder

No I know a few guys that call these their Special Quiet Squibs
They usually End up putting a Match Barrel/Bushing back in for the Repair and swear that it shoots better than before (he he)

Great plan!

5.7 of w231 with 230 gr fmj is my pet load.
5.4 of w231 with 200 gr lswc is my target load.

FWIW!
