The world is ending
"Winchester 231 certainly has been hard to get. The plant that makes Winchester powders does not want to make 231 as well as a few other powders. These older technology powders have different chemistry than the new powders and this older chemistry makes it much slower to make powder: basically, you can make about 2.5 times as many pounds of new chemistry powder in the time it takes to make 1 pound of old chemistry powder. During the process of making the old powders, the waste stream created is huge compared to the waste stream of the new chemistry powders. Chemical waste is very expensive to get rid of. So, the plant wants to phase out the old chemistry powders and replace them with new chemistry powders. While they are still making 231, the amount is being reduced and the amount of new powder such as Titegroup and Longshot is being increased.
Now, we are kind of stuck in the middle. The market is demanding 231 but the maker is not wanting to produce the powder. The result is, over time, 231 is going to go away. Shooters should begin using other powders as they can. Mike Daly Hodgdon Family of Fine Propellants Hodgdon Smokeless Powder IMR Powder Company Winchester Smokeless Propellants GOEX Blackpowder" |
sure, kill the golden goose. that's smart.:bs:
if it's harder/more expensive to make 231 then just raise the price on it to even things out. |
Wow. Real bummer!
I guess I'm glad to still have a couple of 8 pounders of w231 on hand! But I can't find TightGroup either! |
Well that just fuq'n sucks!!!!!
|
WTF...I have about 8 lbs so i guess that is all I am getting. They did just raise the price of 231 too....damn!
|
Crap! I have zero #s. Quick, someone buy me some! :D
Seriously tho, this sucks. |
Guess I got out of reloading at the right time. :)
|
Are there any other old chemistry powders in the cross hairs? what is the new chemistry equivalent or replacement?

Just ordered 10 lbs of TightGroup from cabelas. I should be good for a bit!:D |
this topic is going around on several other forums and it looks like it might be a fake.
one member of the single action forum said he talked with Chris Hodgdon on the phone and he assured him that there was no intentions of them dropping W231 from their lineup. I also read another post were a guy got a return email from someone at hodgdon saying that they weren't dropping it from their powders. time will tell for sure but it looks like they'll still be making it. |
I hope your right but haven't seen any for a year now makes me wonder
|
I wonder if Alliant feels the same way about Unique. It's been scarcer than hen's teeth for a loooong time.

well I think the reason powders like W231, unique, 2400, H110 and Varget are so hard to find is because they're so popular supply can't surpass the demand.
a good example is 22 ammo. manufacturers have increased the amount of 22's they make yet they're still hard to find. I think it's the same thing with the powder. |
Looks like this is fake guys. 13 hours ago Hodgdon posted on their Facebook page that HP-38 is alive and well.

I just got in almost 40lbs of HP38.

had to run to Kerrville this afternoon and stopped in a little gun/grocery/hardware store and they had tons of powder including 4 pounds of HP38. $25.99 a pound. needed to buy some bullets for my new sledgehammer so I only got one pound but it sure gives me hope for the future.:)

i'd gladly gift you some if I wasn't broke this week lol. |
No worries. I think you would have to do a hazmat fee crap to ship. I wonder if the shoo will ship it if you bought it? That will save you the headache of shipping.
Let me see if Bass pro has any (they are an hours drive from me) first. If I can't find any, I'll hit you up. Thanks Zane. |

Now that Hodgdon owns Winchester Powder, here is a quick conversion:
Hodgdon Winchester H-110.......same as...........296 HP-38.......same as...........231 HS-6........same as...........540 (now discontinued) H-414.......same as...........760 |
yep, 231 still difficult to find, but HP38 still not easy to get a hold of either, around here anyways. I have about 14lbs or 231 but when that runs out someday I will have to switch I guess.
Such is life..change is inevitable! |
it's Ellison's fault.
BTW, HP38 was always the same as 231, 231 was just repackaged under the Winchester brand |
