Remington 700 Range Day 2-21-16

nannerSo I took the good old Rem700 out to the range this past weekend to see how it wil shoot with a new stock and Fed 175gr BTHP Match ammo. Saturday I shot at 100yds to check zero and then on Sunday it was 300yds. Lucky for me, the winds died down on Sunday and it was not a factor. First, I'll post the picks from the 100yd shooting. I only took pics of the best targets of the weekend and honestly it was about par for the coarse. I also had some Perfecta 147gr fmj that I shot for the heck of it but, as you will see this barrel does not care for it.

Rifle in it's current setup.....

100yds.....top was Perfecta 147's and bottom was Fed 175's. Center was sight in with Perfecta

This was a good group with the Perf 147's minus the two flyers

This rifle prefers Fed 168gr BTHP Match. Here are four shots with some borrowed ammo from another shooter. The group closed up nicely.

Here are two average targets from Sunday at 300yds with the Fed 175's

In the end I'm happy with 1moa or just slightly more than 1moa at 300yds. Now if I had any 168's, I'd probably get > 1moa. I will get some more 168's and hit the range again when I get a chance at 300yds.

The stock is a Magpul Hunter 700 and it is awesome! The cheek weld is perfect and the LOP is adjustable with a nice pad on the end. The rifle felt solid and well balanced as well as the felt recoil was lowered quite a bit. I'm happy with it.

the load and bullet does make a differencee

Riverpigusmc 02-22-2016 07:33 PM

Yep, I tried sighting in my Savage with Perfecta 147....big mistake. I believe the bolt action .308's in general prefer 168 grain...rifle in the Corps did, my old Savage did. Just ordered some more Black Hills Match in 168

good shootin', Roacjh

Caleb 02-22-2016 07:44 PM

Thank you gents.

Yeah, that perfecta is not so perfect....lol

Caleb 02-22-2016 07:46 PM

Oh pig, forgot to mention that I tried some of the Lake City you sent me. This rifle hates it, LOL..... The group was so bad, I didn't even take pics of the targets.

Remember, it was for a 7.62 chamber. May be the difference. You can interchange 7.62 with a .308 chamber, but not vice versa

BlackKnight 02-22-2016 08:39 PM

Good shooting. Can't wait for the weather to break so I can go back to some long distance shooting. I agree about the 168 gr. That's my and my rifle's preferred round.

ronpaul50 02-22-2016 08:48 PM

Good shooting.

sdmc530 02-22-2016 08:51 PM

Good point, makes sense why it doesn't like the ZQi ammo either then.

It's very ergonomic and does the job. Doesn't hurt that it looks cool, either.

Bad influence abound...
Previous Sunday I was testing one for a friend. I'm not a rifle person, just shoot them occasionally. Big mistake. There went my wish list a few bucks more expensive in a few minutes....

If you want an entry level high power rifle to get started, Savage Axis is hard to beat. 314 delivered from Buds, minus rings and scope. A little tweaking and it is now shooting touching holes. AS A PLUS, I volunteer to help you sight it in...your shoulders and such will need to be relaxed :D

brownie 02-24-2016 09:09 PM

Nice shooting sir.

Grizzman 02-25-2016 12:22 AM

I'm glad you're happy with the stock. Is that a Milspec 5R barreled action?

It's cool that you can get a DBM for it. I still need to send a stock to Badger to be inletted. The mags are AICS compatible? If they're typical Magpul quality, I've got to pick up some of them. The AICS mag price has severely limited my inventory.

How stiff is the forearm?

.....and nice shooting.

Thanks. Yes, it's a Milspec 5r. The stock is great especially for the price ($240ish). According to Magpul, it will accept AICS mags as well as pmags (obviously ). The forend has no give, it is stiff as a board...no flex. It has an insert in it that can be flipped to allow a bull barrel to free float. I grabbed my bipod and started twisting it and the forend didn't flex. I recommend this stock for it's performance and price. It's a little heavier than others out there but, for a precision rifle...who cares. Weight helps with stability. It is also well balanced. It's a keeper.

Thank you... The 10/22 is a great semi .22lr rifle. Everyone should have one!

It definitely sounds like you're happy with the rifle.

My Badger'd bolt arrived today. I like it....a lot. It's a bit odd that Badger doesn't do the work themselves, though their website sure makes it sound like they do. When I'm ready to have the other one done, I'll call River's Bend directly.

I'll let you know if the Magpul 7.62 AC mag works out.

Yes, I'm very happy with it.

I did my own knob (that sounds dirty) and saved some bucks, cost me the price of the knob ($30ish).

Yes, let me know please.

Grizzman 03-02-2016 06:35 PM

I expect to hear Ellison and pig talking about doing their knobs.....not you. I guess I now know.

My metalworking ability is pretty limited, so I didn't even consider doing the mod myself. The smith was pretty quick.

The Magpul 7.62 AC mag arrived today. Yep, I ordered it yesterday at 5:30 PM and received it before 1:00 today. I cycled about 25 dummy rounds through the rifle, and it worked well. Evaluation rounds I loaded to near AICS mag length fit comfortably in the Magpul mags.

It's longer than an AICS 5 round mag, and considering the tight fit, that's okay with me. I noticed the verbiage on the package about modding the follower to allow for a 6 round capacity. After a couple minutes of work, it's a 6 round magazine. I'll definitely be buying some more, and some 10 round ones after they become available.
