Brass to the Forehead

Is that an extractor or ejector issue?

My first range trip with the Escort I experienced 15 out of 100 rounds, the brass smacked my forehead. Will it work itself out or should I tune one of the above?

Without having a gunsmithing backround except home made I would say its an Extractor issue. They can be tuned though. My first STI had some throwing issues, used a youtube video to help me out....

Maybe it's reminding you you could have had a V-8?

Mine tosses brass into my hair!

It's definitely defective all around, send it my way C aleb, I'll do you the favor and take that abusive pistol off your hands so you can concentrate on your next gun purchase! :D

In all seriousness, I have nothing to offer other than the extractor may need a bit of tuning as Phil said... I have also heard of these things working themselves out at times too...

Hope you get it sorted!

I'm a little disappointed that not a single person has recommended you leave it so it knocks a little sense into you. :)

My Px4 would do this on occasion when I first got it but it cleared up after a few hundred rounds.

Caleb.... the first rule of new gun syndrome..... 1. Do NOTHING to the gun until youve gotten several hundred rounds through it. Some things do work out as the gun gets fired. Old timer told me once... "its awful hard to ADD metal"... goes for extractors, slides, frames... whatever.....

Fire the gun for a bit. wear a hat and glasses. See if it works itself out.

Just my 2 cents.

This is what I'm thinking but, we will see.

I will follow this advice first and see what happens. Then I will move on to tuning, thanks.

Did you lube it with the oil provided by DW? I made the mistake of using Slide Glide on my Guardian when I first shot it because that is what I use on my other 1911's. I learned that it was too thick for break in because I had the same symptom as yours. As soon as I replaced the Slide Glide with the DW oil the problem disappeared.

No, I don't have said lube. I use RandCLP, it's slicker than moose snot.

It's a design feature of the STI 1911. The weapon itself has a unique monitoring system that detects when the operator has a tendency to be "limp wristed" After a certain number of rounds fired, the limp wrist detector (LRD) allows the ejector to move slightly to hit the operator in forehead with brass (HOFWB feature) to remind them to tighten their grip.

If you feel the LRD is going off early or the HOFWB is annoying, just call STI and ask them to send you a non-LRD extractor or the HOFWB modification kit. I'd like to listen in on the call if you don't mind.

Glad to help.

funny Now that is a good response!

Seriosely though, you might be onto something here. Did not cross my mind but, now that you mention LW.......makes me wonder. You see, I had forgot to loc-tite the grip screws after replacing the grips. The came loose during use, therefor ending my range trip early. I wonder if that caused a LW scenario causing the brass to the forehead...?...

It was telling me...."You dumbarse, you forgot your allen keys!" BONK!

funny

Try turning the gun to perpendicular instead of GANGSTA style. That should solve most of the problem.

Feathermerchant 07-15-2014 07:51 PM

I had that problem with my CBOB and finally had the ejection port filed a little. Problem solved.

don't forget to grab something at the same time you shoot too. funny

You are simply experiencing a "Lefty Moment".funny

Watched a fella at an indoor range long time ago, he was wearing a cowboy type hat and catching the brass in the top cavity portion of his hat. I was indeed impressed and halted my shooting to observe and admire the old fellas dexterity. Could be a possible solution to consider :) :outta:

That's a bit extreme. How's a man to pick up chicks if he don't look cool when he's shootin'?
