the revolver needs to soak in Kroil for awhile, that will free things up so you can identify further. The length and size of the chamber part of the MarkIII makes me suspect it IS some kind of flare gun. You may try to find serial #'s, model #'s, and call Remington to see if any records exist as to it's original function and go from there. Good luck
