Looks like a really old round,  will know (it's from his time).  PS: I posted your question on two military surplus forums I belong to. Maybe, they will know.

I think it may be an anti-tank round. Possibly a Boys Rifle (English), or a DHSK (Dishka, Soviet), or a Hotchkiss anti-tank.
