Sort of a civilian. No, he did not serve in the US Military, but he did attend a military academy and graduated from it. I think that's why he has so much respect for the military and "snaps those salutes" when entering/leaving Marine 1, Air Force 1, etc.).

We (Oklahoma) just received the body of a soldier from the Korean War. He died at the battle of Chosin.
