I think it's about right. They hate us, we are wasting a whole lot of lives and money there.

This reminds me of a story I heard about JRR Tokein and reporter. The reporter was adamant the the fall of Mordor was allegory for the west's bombing and invasion of Germany.

Tolkien answered, no, because Mordor was utterly detroyed and the victors didn't immediately start sending humanitarian aid.
