I shot the original Ruger commander when it first came out and really liked it a lot.

my FIL has one and I really liked it EXCEPT it didn't take regular 1911 mags....for dumb.

that's odd, I used my Colt mags in the one I shot.

Hmm, I have not heard this before. Did the dealer tell you this or did you try it yourself?

That's a deal breaker right there. I don't want another gun that requires proprietary mags.

my ruger commander uses all my standard mags.

Commanders are on a gov frame. Take the same mags.

The only additional 1911 I'm looking for at the moment is a Colt LW Commander XSE in the same finish as my LW Government XSE, but at least at the moment they don't make one.
