I think it's just a thread protector. On my first BO I thought about running it with no muzzle device and it was pretty good. However the threaded steel being exposed made me nervous about corrosion and accidental damage so I put a break on it.

Actually you both are wrong. It's a new state of the art suppressor made to look like a thread protector.
