Wow. Just wow. Unlike many on here I did not serve. I passed the ASVAB with stellar scores and the physical no problem. Then my recruiter started jerking me around and after that the whole process and current state of the army at the time really left a bad taste in my mouth. I support the men and woman braver than me who stuck it out. They deserve every dollar and then some. Now if we had a war worth fighting....

I scored high on the ASVAB as well. The recruiter offered me an E6 as a Fire Cheif. Said I would get to shoot the missiles. In the late 80's thing here were pretty calm and I was thinking about it. Had just met a girl and was really looking forward to how things would go for us. Then he starts with the hard sell. "Be your own man!" " Raise your hand, swear in and ship out tomorrow!" "I'll fix those tickets and get you a Boss Mustang, but you need to swear in NOW!" I wouldn't have minded the military structure and command but this guy was more like a bully and wouldn't accept me leaving the office that day without swearing in. Made me feel like it wasnt where I wanted to be at the moment.

I ended up marrying that girl and no way she would have waited for me to go through basic and be afloat while she was having fun at FSU.

Gunny Rakovich was honest. He stated:
"You have a 130 GCT" (160 is genius)
" so they will probably make you a grunt"
"on the plus side, you may get into a unit that gives you a chance to kill people"

He was correct on all counts
